Greenwood Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps. (non emergency)

Greenwood Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps. in Greenwood Lake, NY

On April 1, 1954 the Greenwood Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded. The Greenwood Lake Lions Club purchased the Corps' first Ambulance- a used 1947 Cadillac S&S. In 1957, the Corps added a second rig- a Miller Meteor Cadillac.

The first building was erected on village property behind the fire house on Church Street using 100% donated materials and built by volunteer labor. In 1961, property on Edgemere Ave was donated by Mr. and Mrs. L Gustam Moses and a new building was made to house the growing corps. That year was also the first to see the use of 2-way radios inside ambulances, linking crews with dispatchers. In the 1980's, electronic pagers and police dispatching was established.

Over the years we have seen advances in EMS continue to bring new protocols and equipment to the ield. In the 80's we became a NYS Certified Corps. Our BLS crews began to work together with ALS crews to bring an even higher level of care to patients at emergency scenes.

The 1990's saw the advent of semi-automatic cardiac defibrillators, aiding our ability to perform CPR. We became a tax district and began receiving needed funding from the Town of Warwick. We were able to purchase the property on WIndermere Ave and build our current headquarters.

The Corps has continued to see growth and big events in the new millennium. Members responded to the World Trade Center to aid in the recovery efforts in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks. We have twice been named Orange County's Agency of the Year. Membership has grown, as has the total number of EMT's who provide the community with needed medical care. All three ambulances have been replaced, with the newest arriving in 2016. Each helps us respond to over 500 calls annually.

Our members range from our teenage Junior Corps, up to those with over 50 years of service to our community; all share the same goal, delivering the highest level of care to members of our community. It is what we have done for over 60 years and will continue to do well into the future.
